Holidays mean work on KDE for me. Since my father has said : “where are tool tips on the taskbar?”, i have worked on the resurrection of our tool tips in plasma. After 3 days of working refactoring the existing code, thinking on a easy tool tip manager you can see the result :
And for sebas :
Of course it react to theme changes :
Now i will send a big attack from my mega-patch pokemon and wait aaron feedbacks.

Awesome π

Any chance of that being part of 4.1 final? That should be considered a bugfix, right?
July 15, 2008 at 11:19 pm
i will see with plasma team if it’s too risky to backport it. I think the risk is not big but we have to think about it. It’s not really a bug fix because the stuff wasn’t ported to plasma 2.0 lib. In all cases it will be present for 4.2 π

So, it was resurrected in 4.0 and then killed again, then re-resurrected again for 4.1-2 ? Jesus, sounds like a lot of deaths to me π

fantastic!

Heh, 4.1 isn’t out yet and already I’m wondering “when will 4.2 be out with all these new goodies!?”.
July 15, 2008 at 11:46 pm
It could be considered for 4.1.1, maybe, if the release team decides so. We’ve already released -rc1, I guess adding a tooltip manager now is asking for problems. It hasn’t had the testing it would have needed.

great π
maybe a transparent slightly background will make it looks less “massive” ?
July 15, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Ah too bad.. I’m really missing that clock tooltip. Here’s hoping for 4.1.1!
July 15, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Heller : i have added a screenshot for you, just change your theme to have something less “massive”. There is a special svg in theme definition for tooltips

Is the patch available anywhere yet?

Good, very good π

WOW… good work, I love KDE and all their DEv’s π this looks great… keep it up.

Great work! The only disturbing thing I see is that the tooltip is overlapping a couple of pixels with the taskbar. Imho it would be nicer if it appears exactly above the taskbar.

how about those awesome effects from KDE 3.x, you that one with the dots,
they were so cool, and it just proves you that compositing doesnt necessarily equal coolness.

Great, that gives the kde4 desktop more of final touch and love, that its sometimes missing from kde3.
Hopefully it is at least included with 4.1.1, if not already in 4.1 π

Note that this is 4.2 material. No one said it would be in 4.1.1, and 4.2 is more likely. It will not be in 4.1, if at all, and therefore the release team needs to make an exception to the no features rule, it could *maybe* go into 4.1.1. Don’t hold your breath though. Don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t make it into the 4.1 branch and if you have to wait until 4.2.
July 16, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I don’t think you need to worry about that. Getting it for 4.1 (or 4.1.1) would have been nice, but I doubt anyone really expected it now that 4.1 is just around the corner. Hoping is another thing…

In case anyone still reads this, we backported the tooltip patches (tooltip manager, patches to applets to actually use it) to Fedora’s 4.1.0 packages, you can find the patch in Fedora’s packaging CVS (sorry, no link because the post ends up filtered otherwise π¦ ).

@kevin : that’s cool, we haven’t backported it because we don’t want to backport feature again in branch (like in 4.0), but that’s the choice of the distribution and that’s good
